2013 marks the 12th year of Swathanthra Malayalam Computing's existence - we grew up right along side digital Malayalam, from the first unsure steps to the current confident stride. For the first time, we are going to hold a large scale celebration that will honor free software, its developers and our beloved mother tongue. October 14, 15 will see the kickoff, at Kerala Sahithya Academy Hall, Thrissur.
In the Year 2001, Baiju M, a student at NIT Calicut started up a community called "Malayalam Linux Online". About ten months later, the community adopted the name Swathanthra Malayalam Computing. SMC's philosophy stems from Free Software - as such, all its efforts are free software. Within this span of 12 years, SMC contributed to everything from localization of free software projects, to rendering fixes on GNU/Linux desktops & mobile, input tools and fonts, to almost all areas that affected Malayalam's growth on computers. SMC was a participating organization, twice, in Google Summer of Code during this period. During this period, SMC collaborated with governmental/non-governmental efforts that promoted Malayalam Language computing. Notable among those efforts were SMC's contributions that were essential to building the Free Software based IT infrastructure that serves as a base for prestigious government undertakings such as IT@School and the GoK's Malayalam computing campaign that started in 2008. The community attracted young developers and language lovers alike, and burgeoned into the largest developer community in India, eventually turning into a worthy role model to other Indian language computing communities.
In order to spread the news and drum up participation, workshops are being conducted in collaboration with different educational and cultural institutions across the state from the first week of September onwards. These workshops were kicked off at the first workshop on September 6th Friday, at the Thunchathezhuthachan Malayalam University, which started with the 12 year anniversary's logo release by the VC Shri K Jayakumar. Follow up workshops are being conducted across the state, at several colleges/engineering colleges and polytechnics. These workshops are organized to impart a preliminary knowledge and introduction to Malayalam Computing tools on Free Software Platforms.
